The Role of YouTube by tom_beck

And my thesis statement is ?YouTube has risen from humble orgins and has changed the way the entire world looks at the internet?

November 23, 2009, 1:04 pm - [1]

To be honest, I just threw in the ?humble orgins? thing so I can eat a page of my essay taking about the history of YouTube.

November 23, 2009, 1:08 pm - [2]

But after that I discuss how YouTube impacts us in various aspects on our lives

November 23, 2009, 1:08 pm - [3]

I divided the examples of how it impacts us into two groups; how impacts those watching it, and how it impacts those uploading the videos

November 23, 2009, 1:10 pm - [4]

In order to understand how YouTube effects the viewer one must understand why we view stuff on YouTube.

November 23, 2009, 1:10 pm - [5]

First, obviously we watch YouTube videos for entertainment. It's an endless source of quirky little videos that will make you chuckle.

November 23, 2009, 1:11 pm - [6]

YouTube has even given us memes which means in this context means a cultural item that gains popularity via viral videos, chat rooms etc.

November 23, 2009, 1:12 pm - [7]

Some examples of popular memes are ?David after Dentist?, ?Chocolate Rain?, and ?Charlie the Unicorn?.

November 23, 2009, 1:13 pm - [8]

YouTube has become embedded into our culture and has given us another medium for us to express ourselves.

November 23, 2009, 1:13 pm - [9]

Personally I think making videos that can grab an audience while express one’s self is an art.

November 23, 2009, 1:13 pm - [10]

And to dub all of YouTube is a waste of time is to dub art as a waste of time.

November 23, 2009, 1:14 pm - [11]

Along with entertainment, YouTube videos can be also be used as a source of news whether it be local, international, or political.

November 23, 2009, 1:14 pm - [12]

All the major news networks (Fox, CNN, etc) have a channel on YouTube that anyone can go to and watch whatever stories they want.

November 23, 2009, 1:15 pm - [13]

Many politicians in order to reach the younger demographic, have made YouTube accounts and upload speeches, ideas, suggestions

November 23, 2009, 9:47 pm - [14]

Obama’s channel, BarackObamadotcom, shares a speech at least once a week to its 180,000+ subscribers.

November 23, 2009, 9:47 pm - [15]

Even outspoken individuals like micheal moore has an channel on YouTube.

November 23, 2009, 9:48 pm - [16]

Because YouTube is so huge, it is catching the eye of businesses and advertisers, who can use it for marketing.

November 23, 2009, 9:48 pm - [17]

It seems like more and more companies are making viral videos to create hype for their product.

November 23, 2009, 9:49 pm - [18]

Not only is it cheaper to upload a video than to pay a network for some air time,

November 23, 2009, 9:49 pm - [19]

but studies show that more and more people are migrating away from the TV and spending more time on their computer

November 23, 2009, 9:49 pm - [20]

You don’t have to be a business to promote yourself on YouTube. Anyone can do it.

November 23, 2009, 9:50 pm - [21]

For example the band ?Ok Go ? uploaded a music video of their song ?Here it Goes Again?

November 23, 2009, 9:50 pm - [22]

which has received more than 48 million views and is arguably the reason for the song’s success.

November 23, 2009, 9:50 pm - [23]

Anyone can make money using YouTube. If you get something along 200,000 hits on your videos you can apply to be a ?YouTube partner?

November 23, 2009, 9:51 pm - [24]

Google will run ads at the bottom of all your videos and you’ll get money for each view your videos get.

November 23, 2009, 9:51 pm - [25]

So the more views your videos get the more benefits you get. But how do people get so many views?

November 23, 2009, 9:51 pm - [26]

A lot of vloggers have tips to get more views. Different things work for different people but some things that everyone can agree on.

November 23, 2009, 9:52 pm - [27]

You have to be active in the YouTube community, keep your videos short (about 3-4 minutes), and have an effective thumbnail.

November 23, 2009, 9:53 pm - [28]

I wanted to test the thumbnail theory out. So performed an experiment testing the effect of thumbnails on the amount of views it gets.

November 23, 2009, 9:53 pm - [29]

I uploaded 3 similar videos each of which has a unique thumbnail.

November 23, 2009, 9:53 pm - [30]

The 1st one had a picture of me on it. The 2nd one had a picture of me with a CENSORED bar on my face.

November 23, 2009, 9:54 pm - [31]

And finally the last one had a picture of the one and only megan fox.

November 23, 2009, 9:54 pm - [32]

I posted the link to my videos on facebook and twitter and let them pick any video they want.

November 23, 2009, 9:55 pm - [33]

Here are the results as of 11/22 my control (1st one) got 20 views, the CENSORED one got 24 views, and megan fox got a whopping 41 views.

November 23, 2009, 9:56 pm - [34]

According to the insight feature on YouTube Megan Fox has gotten hits from Alaska and Germany.

November 23, 2009, 9:56 pm - [35]

So the results are obvious Megan Fox’s figure attracted more traffic than a skinny white kid.

November 23, 2009, 9:56 pm - [36]

So In conclusion YouTube can have many uses that people wouldn’t expect such a causal site to have.

November 23, 2009, 9:56 pm - [37]

YouTube is evolving in our opinions from a mindless timewaster to something productive, functional, and even world-changing.
